The Waves
Of The Coast by Hannah
High
winds struck Port Dabert, a small town on the coast of Ireland. Not many
tourists go there but it's known across Ireland for its stunning coast and
beautiful lighthouse.
As
the night crept in rain began to fall. The clock struck midnight and there
wasn't a single soul to be seen. As waves crashed down on the rocks by the foot
of the lighthouse, only one soul was there to see the rough, harsh ocean.
An
old man sat in his chair watching and listening. He goes by the name
Mr.McCarthy. He lives alone in the lighthouse.
Mind
you he wasn't always so lonely. He had a wife but sadly she passed away a few
years ago.
After
she died Mr.McCarthy went to find a new passion, he found the lighthouse.
Mr.McCarthy’s
new role was to keep the lighthouse looking good. When he had first taken the
job to tend to the lighthouse it looked tired and needed some TLC, something
Mr.McCarthy had plenty of.
He
had also given the lighthouse a nickname and it had stuck. Soon the people of
the town were referring to the lighthouse as ‘Martha’. That was his wife’s name
and he wanted to keep her name alive.
Tonight
was no different from any other night. After making a cup of sweet tea and
settling down for the night with his favourite book, he was surprised to get a
knock on his door. He was even more surprised to see Sargent Byrne standing in
the doorway drenched by the rain.
Mr.McCarthy
stood in confusion as Sargent Byrne walked in.
“How
can I help you Eddie?” He said curiously. “Well Michael, I was on patrol and
couldn't help but notice the light was out in the lighthouse.” “It was working
a few hours ago.” He replied. “The storm has really picked up and a while ago I
saw some lightning.” “I’ll go up and fix the bulb.”
With
that in mind Sargent Byrne nodded and left the house.
It
was just past 10 p.m. when Mr.McCarthy set off to fix the bulb. Flashlight in hand
as he trudged up the steep stairs leading to the lighthouse chamber.
The
storm was fierce. Every few seconds there was another bolt of lightning. It
wasn't just rain anymore, it was a downpour. The drops struck the already wet
ground, pitting the bare earth like they were bullets from above.
Inside
the lighthouse chamber, in the far corner was table with two spare bulbs. He
grabbed them both.
He
unhooked the latch and replaced the old bulbs. He pulled down on the lever to
turn it on but nothing happened. Not even a flicker. It was getting late and
Mr.McCarthy wanted to go back to the warmth of his sitting room.
He
came to the conclusion it was most likely the fuse box. He opened it
confidently, fully expecting to see the problem immediately. To his surprise,
everything looked good.
“Now
what?” he thought to himself, leaning against the wall, completely oblivious to
the dangling live wire.
Mr.McCarthy
realised half a second too late. As he fell to floor, he thought about how
ironic it was that the lighthouse he called Martha had sent him on his way to
see his Martha.
Beth's Pencil Drawing
'A lesson learned' by Matthew
The year was 1883 and the SS Pacific was steaming steadily to
Vancouver.
The sea was calm and there was no wind. One of the lookouts
checked his pocket watch. The time was 1:34 am. They should be arriving in
Vancouver in a few hours. However, the SS Pacific was heading off course, and
was heading straight towards an island.
Ten minutes passed and the lookouts spotted the shore and
rang the bell. The First officer ordered to turn hard to port. It was too
little too late however, and the rocks on the seabed ripped a massive hole on
the side of the ship below the waterline. The power immediately went out. The
Captain awoke and sent some of the officers below to assess the damage.
They came back and reported major damage and heavy flooding
to the starboard side. The ship was already starting to list slightly. To make
matters worse, it was drifting to deeper waters. The fifth officer started to
fire distress flares at two minute intervals. The captain ordered the
passengers to be awoken and the lifeboats lowered and to be filled with women
and children first. Ten minutes passed, and the lifeboats were starting to be
lowered. The ships list to the side was a lot more noticeable. Crowds piled up
on deck as the lifeboats were lowered.
Twenty minutes later and people were sliding on the decks as
the ship listed more and more. All of a sudden the ship turned right on its
side. It stayed there for a few more minutes before it sank below the waves.
In the inquiry that followed, they found that the island needed
a lighthouse. The reason the lookouts didn’t find the island sooner was because
there were no waves crashing against the island and no lighthouse to signal to
them.
Even though there was heavy loss of life, it helped prevent
future disasters occurring again.
To this day, the lighthouse is a lasting monument to all who
lost their lives.

The Mystery of Fastnet Rock by Oscar
CHAPTER 1
Once upon a spooky time in Ireland a sailor reported that the light was not on
at the lighthouse of Fastnet Rock. So they got the best detectives they could
find. Yes, they got Detective Scot and his faithful assistant and pet
chimp, Philip and this is where our story begins.
When they arrived they had a look around the grounds just in case there was
anybody about. Strangely there was nobody there. So they went to the
cottage and found a boat. They sailed across to the lighthouse. Scot knocked
on the door and it opened.
“ Are you one of the lighthouse keepers? ” said Scot.
“ Yes, Iʼm Mike ” he said.
“ Hoo Hoo ” said Philip.
“ I know that Philip, Iʼm going to ask him now. Where are the others, I thought
there where three keepers? ” asked Scot.
“ They disappeared last week ” said Mike.
“ Can you tell us their names? ” said Scot.
“ Bear and John “ said Mike.
“Right then, where can we stay? ” said Scot.
Mike showed them to the cottage on the edge of the island.
“Letʼs get some sleep Philip, its going to be a long day tomorrow ”.
CHAPTER 2
In the morning they got up and sailed back to the lighthouse. They knocked
on the door. It was open so they went in.
“Mike! “ said Scot.
“ Chatter, hoo, hoo! “ said Philip.
Mike was nowhere to be seen. There was a cup of tea sitting on the table and
it was still hot! Philip went to Mikeʼs room and found his diary. He brought
it to Scot.
“Good thinking my old chimp” he said.
He had a read he said,
“ Friday 21st of October.....nothing? ”.
“ Hoo, hoo ” said Philip.
“ Mind your language Philip ” said Scot. “ Letʼs go back to the cottage ”.
They went back to the cottage and they looked everywhere.
“How can he disappear just like the others ”said Scot looking at Philip.
Philip said in his mind “ Donʼt look at me, Iʼm just a chimp? ”.
Scot had to think, they had looked everywhere, what were they missing?
Chapter 3
Scot and Philip sat down in the kitchen. Philip had a banana and it was
yummy.
“ Hoo ah yum ” said Philip.
“ What do you mean we didnʼt look in the boat ” said Scot. “We looked at the
boat yesterday ”.
Then he realised that they hadnʼt looked in the boat today.
“ Boy, youʼre smarter then me ” he chuckled.
They ran to the boat. Scot took the sheet off and the three lighthouse man lay
there dead, but how did they get in there?
“ Well, we will never know ” said Philip the chimp.
Scot looked at him weirdly, “ Err Philip, what are you on about? “
“Hoo, hoo ” said Philip.
Now we will leave our detectives there on the island.
They better leave soon because they might be next!
The Lighthouse by Hugo J.
There once was a man fishing in a boat. He was old, about seventy and he was
tired. The waves lapped slowly against the side of the boat. He looked up and
saw a big black cloud.
“ Looks like a storm ” he thought, “ Iʼd better find some shelter ”.
He looked around in case there was a house nearby. There wasn't, but there
was a lighthouse on a small island not far from the boat. The old man rowed
over in a matter of minutes and he attached his boat to a rock.
And that's where the story begins.
The first thing the old man noticed was the smell.
A smell of burnt wood was coming from inside the lighthouse.
“ Odd ” thought the man.
Slowly, he opened the door. Now he had to stop breathing through his nose.
The kitchen was a mess. The fridge had fallen over and the shelve doors were
hanging off their hinges. In the corner of the room there was a pile of burnt logs.
“ Someone has been here recently ” the man thought.
Suddenly something shot out of the cupboard. It was a wasp. Everyone knows
that wasps are The Devilʼs creatures so the old man knew exactly what to do.
He bolted up the stairs. The wasp gave chase, along with all the other wasps
that were hiding in the shelves. The wasps were twice their normal size, so you
can see why the man was running. Up,up,up the stairs the old man ran. How
long had he been running for? Hours, days, years? Probably not years but in
the end he got to the top and slammed the door shut.
“ I need to get out of this lighthouse ” he said to himself “ but how? ”
He pondered this for a moment.
“ I know ” he thought “ If I shine the lighthouse light, people might notice it and
come to help ”
He found the light switch and turned it on. Soon a bright, white light filled the
room. The old man noticed something landing on the light.
“ Is it a wasp? “ he thought.
To his relief he saw it was only a moth.
“ Oh phew ” said the old man “ Its just a moth, what can he do? ”
And then the moth bit his head off.
