Green Schools News

The Green School Committee have been very hard at work already this year! We completed a waste review last year and repeated it this year to see if we had managed to meet our aim of reducing waste in St. Patrick's N.S. by 50%. Last year, in one week, we binned 8.5kg of waste. This year we only had 2.7kg of waste, meaning we reduced waste by 68%!

Well done to everyone in the school for remembering to recycle and compost! We have made St. Patrick's a greener school :)

For the new year we want a new poster to display our Green School Slogan, "Don't be Lazy, Go Green Crazy!", so we are having a poster competition which everyone is allowed to enter. Posters need to include our Green School Slogan, and the closing date is December 11th.

Irish Flag

Today our school was visited by a memeber of Óglaigh na hÉireann to be presented with our own Irish Flag. We also recieved a copy of the 1916 Proclamation, a poster of Amhrán na bhFiann and a information about how to care for the Flag.

Elliot was nominated to read the fourth paragraph of the proclamation. He did a fantastic job.

Oscar was presented the Flag on behalf of the whole school.

Please see http://www.military.ie/en/info-centre/defence-forces-2016/flags-for-schools-initiative/ for more information about this initiative and about the Flag and Proclamation.

Super Troopers

edd9d161-b68f-4891-833b-ed22c5b3feee
As part of our school's campaign to get our first Active School Flag, we are beginning the Super Troopers programme. This is Ireland's first ever health homework programme and it aims to get children doing their 60mins of recommended daily exercise-currently 4 in 5 Irish children do less than this. It also encourages healthy eating and learning about the human body.

The children all received their Super Troopers journal, which has different activities set out for every night at home. These will be checked in school on a Friday, so please remember to bring them in! There is also a wall chart for home which encourages all members of the family to exercise and keep track of how they are doing.

It is hoped that this programme will help the children (and parents and teachers!) to form long-term healthier attitudes and behaviours.

Yo-Yo Yoga Storytelling

Ms Keane's Classroom went down to Trim Library today to take part in the Yo-Yo Yoga Storytelling activity. It was a really active way to enjoy hearing stories. Read more at http://mskeanesclassroom.blogspot.ie/2015/10/library-trip.html
