To all the children in
our school...
I hope you are all well
& trying your best to help your parents during this school closure. I know
you must miss your friends & some of you are probably even missing school
now! All of the teachers in St. Patrick’s miss you & we are all really
looking forward to getting back to normal. Today, we learned that the measures that are
currently in place will go on for at least another few weeks so I
thought I’d write to you & your parents about something that I think is really
important for you to continue to do over the next few weeks…
If there is
one thing that I would LOVE for you to do every day it is to read…if you are currently reading books at
home, that is absolutely fantastic & please keep it up!
Parents: I know that some children need no
encouragement to read for pleasure.
For the
reluctant reader in your house, the best thing you can do is set aside some
time every day for reading (morning, afternoon or evening, whichever suits your
circumstances best). If you could take some time to listen to your child reading
& talk to them about what they’re reading, that really is one of the best
ways to support your child’s education.
You could…
·
set
a timer (for 10 – 15 minutes & read silently together; you reading your
book/magazine/newspaper & your child reading his/hers – monkey see, monkey do!)
·
read
alternate pages together & talk about the story
·
If
you’re struggling with time issues, ask your child to read to his/her sibling. On Wednesday mornings in school, we have ‘Reading Buddies’ so children will be
very familiar with this already. If they have no sibling in the house, maybe
they could read to their pet or read remotely to a grandparent by skype etc.
Another incentive could be to take a short recording of your child reading aloud to be uploaded onto their classroom blog.

The weekly work for all classes will be in the teacher sections of our
website on Sunday the 19th of April. The work is suggested material for your child to cover & we most certainly do not expect you to replicate school at home! The School Hub on RTÉ 2 on weekday mornings @ 11.00 a.m. is excellent & we'd highly recommend it.
All of the teachers really love to get your photos every week & to share them here on our blog.
We hope you all have a lovely Easter & that you & your family stay safe & healthy.
Take care
& best regards
Mr. Larke
