Recycling Plastic Bottles- idea for summer holidays!

Well the summer holidays are almost here and no doubt many parents will be wondering how on earth they're going to keep their little darlings occupied for a whole 8 weeks? It's a fair question!

With the Irish weather as unpredictable as it is, you can be guaranteed there'll be a few rainy days where everyone will be stuck inside and the kids will be bored....so with that in mind, I thought it might be worth posting a simple idea that perhaps some of the kids would be interested in....

Have a look at the following link: http://www.sealrescueireland.org/blog/ecobricks

Seal Rescue Ireland have an initiative to encourage recycling of plastic bottles by converting them into "eco- bricks". These bricks can then be re-used and turned into furniture or even to build walls. The idea is to raise awareness of unnecessary plastic waste and to hopefully reduce the amount of plastic waste we produce.  Lots of sea animals, including seals, are getting entangled in plastic waste or ingesting plastic waste which can be fatal. This idea might be a way to re-use and -up-cycle some of the plastic bottles that end up in your recycling bin or rubbish. However, bear in mind that Seal Rescue Ireland have to assess the weight/quality of the ecobrick before accepting it so they will NOT accept bricks sent to them via post!

Mellowes School Tour

The children in Juniors-2nd Class had a great day on their tour today. There were loads of things to do and play with. We had a talent show and planted some coriander too.

Have a look at what we got up to:

Active School Week-Friday

Friday was our last day of Active Week this year, and luckily the weather held out for us!

We launched our Daily Mile initiative. Every day in June we will run, walk and jog around our walkway for 15mins to start off the day!

After this the classes had time with their teachers to play different games. Here are the Infants working together to get their pirate crew across the water to their treasure island:

To finish off the week, we had our annual Sports Day. In order to make it more inclusive this year, we did fun stations instead of just races.

Many thanks to our P.A. for helping out on the day and for the fruit, water and ice cream truck!

Thanks again to all of our visitors this year for Active Week!

Active School Week-Thursday

Today we had two brilliant parents give up their free time to come in to our school.

First up was Kickboxing/Karate Kenpo with Anna Zywot and coaches from Braveheart Martial Arts Academy, then we had soccer with Robert Westphal from Trim Celtic.

Thanks so much for coming in, and for not charging us a penny for the excellent training sessions!

Active School Week-Wednesday

It was a busy day for Active Week today! We had a lovely start to the day with Relax Kids with Lisa. The children did games, stretching, mindfulness and relaxation.

Unfortunately, due to the weather, we didn't get to go to the Pitch and Putt, but we did manage to do tennis up at Trim Tennis Courts, which is an excellent facility.

We also had circuits in the hall!

Tomorrow we have Kickboxing/Karate Kenpo and Soccer...many thanks to the parents who are giving up their time to come and coach us for free! We are very grateful!
